moschee.io vs commonsplace

commonsplace puts your fundraising project in front of a German-Muslim crowdfunding community. moschee.io brings donations to your mosque's own website and app — under your name, as part of a platform with screens, livestreaming, and AI khutbah translation.

The short version

Which one fits your community?

commonsplace describes itself as the first German-Muslim crowdfunding platform and is run by commonsplace UG (haftungsbeschränkt) in Aachen. Initiators publish projects with a description, funding target, and funding period — from buying a mosque to education projects and emergency relief — and the community supports them once or on a recurring basis. In the “Moschee” (mosque) category, many congregations and initiatives raise money for construction, purchases, and renovation. On top of that come goodies as a thank-you for supporters, ticket sales for events, and the “Freitags-Sadaqah” (Friday Sadaqah): an automatic donation every Friday that commonsplace distributes across community projects.

moschee.io is not a crowdfunding portal and does not come with its own donor base — we say so openly. With moschee.io, donations run through your mosque's own website and app, under your name and your domain: fundraising projects with a goal amount and progress bar, one-off or recurring donations, payouts via Stripe Connect directly to the mosque's account, a donor portal, and optionally SumUp card readers for donations on site. Donations are one building block of a platform that also includes prayer times screens, livestreaming, and live AI translation of the khutbah.

So the key question is not “Which tool is better?” but “Where will the donors come from?” If your mosque wants to win supporters far beyond its own congregation for a major building project, commonsplace plays to its strength: reach within the German-Muslim community. If it is about your congregation's ongoing donations — Friday giving, upkeep, Ramadan — they belong on your own website and in your own app. Many mosques can sensibly combine both.

Choose moschee.io if…

  • Donations should run permanently on your own website with a custom domain and in your community app — under your mosque's name rather than on a third-party portal.
  • Your congregation should give regularly: one-off or recurring donations (weekly, monthly, yearly) and fundraising projects with a goal amount, progress bar, and optional deadline.
  • You want to look after donors over time: a donor portal with German tax receipts for recorded online and cash donations, provided your mosque is set up as tax-exempt, plus analytics and a per-transaction CSV export.
  • People also give inside the mosque: SumUp card readers can be connected, and online donors can choose to cover the payment fees.
  • Donations are only one part of your presence: website, community app, prayer times screens, livestreaming, and live AI khutbah translation all come from one platform.

Choose commonsplace if…

  • Reach beyond your own congregation: commonsplace brings together projects from the German-Muslim community on one platform, with a dedicated “Moschee” (mosque) category, a newsletter, and a WhatsApp channel — a real advantage for large building or purchase projects.
  • The Friday Sadaqah: supporters give automatically on Fridays from €5 a month without paying any fees themselves; according to commonsplace, the money is distributed across more than 300 community projects.
  • Many payment methods: credit card, PayPal, Klarna, SEPA direct debit, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Link, and iDEAL. Supporters can give anonymously and set up daily, weekly, or monthly recurring support.
  • Review and safekeeping: every project is checked manually before launch, Stripe verifies initiators and screens them against sanctions lists, and the money sits in a dedicated client money account at Stripe until payout — according to commonsplace, it never has access to the funds itself.
  • Crowdfunding tools such as dynamic milestones, goodies as a thank-you, ticket sales for events, and updates to supporters on the project page. Fees are charged as a percentage of the amount raised; commonsplace does not mention a monthly base fee.

Pricing

How pricing compares

commonsplace is funded through fees on the money raised, paid by the project initiator: according to its fee page, about 3–4% goes to payment processing by Stripe, plus a usage fee of at most 5%, which is often 4% or even 3%. Both are deducted automatically from the amount raised, and an Instant Payout costs another 2%. According to commonsplace, the usage fee also covers costs from withdrawn payments and chargebacks; special terms are available in individual cases. commonsplace is free for supporters, but at checkout they are offered a voluntary contribution to the platform.

moschee.io pricing: Gebetszeiten free; Basis €99 per month (€89 per month billed yearly); Gemeinde Plus €199 per month (€179 per month billed yearly); Reichweite €499 per month (€449 per month billed yearly). On online donations, moschee.io charges a platform fee of 1% (Basis), 0.75% (Gemeinde Plus), and 0.5% (Reichweite) depending on the plan, plus Stripe's payment fees, which donors can choose to cover. Online donations require a paid plan from Basis upward; the free “Gebetszeiten” plan does not include them.

The two models work in fundamentally different ways: with commonsplace, you only pay a share of what is actually raised — commonsplace does not mention a monthly base fee. That is attractive for a single, time-limited project. With moschee.io, the platform fee per donation is lower, but you pay the plan's monthly fee, which also covers the website, app, screens, livestreaming, and AI translation. The more ongoing donations your mosque receives over the year, the more the difference in percentage fees matters; for a one-off campaign, purely percentage-based pricing can work out cheaper.

Our verdict

moschee.io or commonsplace?

If your mosque wants to fund a large, time-limited undertaking — a purchase, construction, or renovation — and needs supporters far beyond its own congregation, commonsplace is an obvious choice. The platform comes with a German-Muslim community, reviews projects before launch, and offers crowdfunding tools such as milestones, goodies, and updates. moschee.io cannot replace that reach.

If, on the other hand, it is about your congregation's ongoing donations, moschee.io is the stronger option: donations on your own website and in your app, under your name, with recurring giving, a donor portal, SumUp card readers on site, and payouts directly to the mosque's account — embedded in a platform with prayer times screens, livestreaming, and AI khutbah translation.

The two are not mutually exclusive. A sensible split: the big building project as a campaign on commonsplace, recurring donations on your own website. Point to the campaign in a news post on your website and in the app so your congregation knows both ways to give. There is no direct integration between the two services.

Common questions about commonsplace and moschee.io

How much does commonsplace cost a mosque?

According to its fee page, the project initiator pays about 3–4% in payment fees to Stripe and a usage fee of at most 5% (often 4% or 3%); both are deducted automatically from the amount raised. If you want the money within 30 minutes via Instant Payout, provided your bank supports it, you pay another 2%. The platform is free for supporters; at checkout, a voluntary contribution to commonsplace is suggested. As of October 4, 2026 — see commonsplace.de/fees for current details.

Is moschee.io a crowdfunding platform like commonsplace?

No. moschee.io is not a donation portal and has no donor base of its own that discovers your projects. Donations run through your mosque's website and app, under your name — so supporters come from your congregation and your own outreach. In return, donations are part of your own presence, the money is paid out via Stripe Connect directly to the mosque, and website, app, screens, livestreaming, and AI khutbah translation all come from the same platform.

Can we use commonsplace and moschee.io together?

Yes, and for many mosques that makes sense. A large, time-limited undertaking such as a purchase or construction benefits from the reach of a crowdfunding campaign on commonsplace. Your congregation's regular donations — weekly, monthly, or yearly — and card-reader donations inside the mosque run through moschee.io. There is no direct integration; point to the campaign in a news post on your website and app. Keep in mind that donations made on commonsplace do not appear in your moschee.io donation analytics.

Do donors on commonsplace receive a donation receipt?

commonsplace itself cannot issue donation receipts. The project page states whether the initiator can; with the payment confirmation, donors receive the initiator's email address so they can request one. With moschee.io, donors download their German tax receipt for recorded online and cash donations themselves in the donor portal, provided your mosque is set up as tax-exempt. In both cases, only a tax-exempt association may issue such receipts, and it remains responsible for their content.

When does the mosque receive the money raised?

With commonsplace, Stripe holds the money in a client money account of the initiator until payout. Once the overall goal is reached and identity verification is complete, it is paid out automatically, usually within 2–4 business days; social projects receive the money at the end of the funding period even if the goal was missed. According to commonsplace, donors have a 14-day right of withdrawal; withdrawn amounts are debited from the initiator's account afterwards. With moschee.io, donations are paid out via Stripe Connect directly to the mosque's account; a goal amount is optional.

Is commonsplace's Friday Sadaqah a donation to our mosque?

Not directly. According to commonsplace, the Friday Sadaqah goes into a funding pool managed by the platform and is distributed across selected community projects; the costs incurred are shared proportionally among the funded projects. If your congregation should give every week specifically to your mosque, offer weekly donations with moschee.io on your own website and in your app — or collect on site with a SumUp card reader.
