moschee.io vs betterplace.org

betterplace.org is Germany's largest donation platform — with reach, donation receipts handled for you, and 2.8% transaction costs. moschee.io collects donations under your mosque's own name on its website, in its app, and with a card reader on site — and brings a website, screens, livestreaming, and AI khutbah translation along with it.

The short version

Which one fits your community?

By its own account, betterplace.org is Germany's largest donation platform. It is run by the nonprofit betterplace.org gGmbH in Berlin, founded in 2007, and more than 32,000 projects raise money there. Nonprofits based in Germany create a project page for free, can embed a donation form on their own website, and reach additional donors through partner portals, fundraising campaigns, and matching campaigns. betterplace keeps 2.8% of every donation to cover transaction costs and in return handles payment processing and donation receipts.

Mosque associations use betterplace.org too, for example for new-build, renovation, or expansion projects. Two points are worth knowing: only organizations based in Germany whose nonprofit status is recognized by the tax office can create a project — usually proven with a tax exemption notice (Freistellungsbescheid). And legally, your supporters donate to betterplace.org gGmbH, which passes the money on to your association as a pass-through charity (Förderkörperschaft) and therefore also issues the receipts.

moschee.io is not a donation portal with its own audience; it is your mosque's digital platform. Donation pages and projects appear on your own website and in your app, the money goes through Stripe Connect directly to the mosque's account, donors download their German donation receipt (Zuwendungsbestätigung) in the donor portal if your mosque is set up as tax-exempt, and SumUp card readers accept donations inside the mosque. On top of that come a website builder, prayer times screens, livestreaming, and live AI translation of the khutbah. In short: betterplace brings reach and takes paperwork off your hands, moschee.io brings donations into your own presence — and many mosques do well with both.

Choose moschee.io if…

  • Donations should run under your mosque's own name: donation pages and projects with a goal amount, progress bar, and optional deadline on your own website and in your app instead of on a portal.
  • You want the money to reach your mosque directly: payouts via Stripe Connect to the mosque's account, one-off or recurring donations (weekly, monthly, yearly), and donors who can choose to cover the fees.
  • You also want to accept card donations inside the mosque: SumUp card readers can be connected to moschee.io.
  • Your donors should download their German donation receipt themselves: a donor portal for recorded online and cash donations, if your mosque is set up as tax-exempt — plus analytics and a CSV export for your treasurer.
  • You need more than donations: a website with a custom domain, a community app, prayer times screens, livestreaming, and live AI translation of the khutbah with audio and captions, all from one platform.

Choose betterplace.org if…

  • Reach a single mosque can hardly build on its own: Germany's largest donation platform according to the vendor, with more than 32,000 projects, partner portals with companies such as Sparkassen and PayPal, plus fundraising and matching campaigns.
  • Less paperwork: legally, every donation goes to betterplace.org gGmbH, which as a pass-through charity also issues the donation receipts — a simplified receipt by email for donations up to €300, and above that a receipt donors download from their personal donation overview.
  • Low, clearly stated costs: no platform or setup fees, 2.8% of each donation for transaction costs, and 97.2% goes to your organization.
  • Trust through verification: every organization has to prove its nonprofit status, betterplace re-checks the documents regularly, and projects report publicly on how they use the donations.
  • Many payment methods and tools: PayPal, direct debit, credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and bank transfer, a free donation form for your own website, newsletters, thank-you messages, and free webinars from the betterplace academy.

Pricing

How pricing compares

betterplace.org is free for nonprofits — with no platform or setup fees. betterplace keeps 2.8% of every donation to cover transaction costs, and 97.2% goes to your organization; this also applies to donations through the embedded donation form. betterplace funds the running of the platform partly through a voluntary extra contribution that the donation form suggests to donors and that they can adjust freely. It is not deducted from the donation to your mosque.

moschee.io pricing: Gebetszeiten free; Basis €99 per month (€89 per month billed yearly); Gemeinde Plus €199 per month (€179 per month billed yearly); Reichweite €499 per month (€449 per month billed yearly). On online donations, moschee.io charges a platform fee of 1% (Basis), 0.75% (Gemeinde Plus), and 0.5% (Reichweite) depending on the plan, plus Stripe's payment fees, which donors can choose to cover. Website, app content, screens, donations, and AI translation are included in every plan from Basis up; higher tiers raise the quotas. Online donations are not included in the free “Gebetszeiten” plan.

The two models work differently: with betterplace, 2.8% per donation covers transaction costs and there is no base fee. With moschee.io, you pay a monthly plan, a platform fee per donation, and Stripe's fees — and in return the website, app, screens, livestreaming, and translation come with the same plan. If you only raise money occasionally for a single project, betterplace is usually the cheaper option; if donations are meant to be a permanent part of your own presence, compare the whole package.

Our verdict

moschee.io or betterplace.org?

If your mosque association is recognized as a nonprofit and wants to reach donors well beyond its own congregation for a specific undertaking — a new building or a renovation, for example — betterplace.org is a very good choice. You get reach, a well-known setting, many payment methods, and donation receipts you do not have to handle yourself — with no base fee.

If, on the other hand, donations should be a fixed part of your mosque's own presence — on its website, in its app, and by card reader inside the mosque — moschee.io is the better fit. The donation goes directly to your mosque, donors of tax-exempt mosques download their receipt in the donor portal, and the website, screens, livestreaming, and AI khutbah translation come from the same platform.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Many mosques can promote their big building project on betterplace.org and run ongoing giving — Friday donations, Ramadan, regular supporters, and on-site donations — through moschee.io. What matters then is a clean split: betterplace issues receipts for donations made through betterplace, your mosque for donations made through moschee.io.

Common questions about betterplace.org and moschee.io

How much does betterplace.org cost a mosque association?

According to betterplace, it is free for nonprofits, with no platform or setup fees. 2.8% of each donation is kept to cover transaction costs, and 97.2% goes to your association. Donors can also make a voluntary contribution to betterplace's operations, which is not deducted from their donation to you. As of October 4, 2026 — see betterplace.org for current details.

Can any mosque raise donations on betterplace.org?

No. Only organizations based in Germany whose nonprofit status has been recognized by the tax office can create a project directly — proven with a tax exemption notice (Freistellungsbescheid), the annex to the corporate tax assessment, or a notice under section 60a of the German Fiscal Code. betterplace re-checks these documents regularly, and payouts require valid proof. Mosque associations raise funds there too, for example for building and renovation projects. With moschee.io, by contrast, only the donation receipt depends on your mosque being set up as tax-exempt.

Who issues the donation receipts — betterplace or the mosque?

On betterplace.org, every donation legally goes to betterplace.org gGmbH, which passes it on to your association as a pass-through charity. That is why betterplace issues the receipts: a simplified receipt by email for single donations up to €300, and for larger amounts an official receipt donors can download from 30 days after the donation. Your association must not issue its own receipts for these donations. With moschee.io, the donation goes directly to your mosque; donors download your mosque's receipt in the donor portal, provided it is set up as tax-exempt — and your association remains responsible for its content.

When does the money reach the mosque?

On betterplace.org, donations are first collected in the project account. After a 15-day holding period, you request the transfer; betterplace pays out weekly, usually on Wednesdays, to an account in your association's name. A request always covers the full available amount and must be made within 12 months — according to the terms of use, funds that are not requested revert to betterplace after several reminders. With moschee.io, online donations are paid out via Stripe Connect directly to your mosque's account.

Can we embed betterplace's donation form on our mosque website?

Yes. With a project on betterplace.org you get a free donation form that you embed in your website as an iframe; the color, default amount, and donation frequency can be adjusted. Donors stay on your site, but legally they donate to betterplace, and the 2.8% transaction costs apply. With moschee.io, donation pages are built into your mosque website and app and run under your mosque's own name.

Can we use betterplace.org and moschee.io together?

Yes, and for many mosques it makes sense. A typical split: a large building or renovation project on betterplace.org to reach donors beyond your own congregation; ongoing giving, Ramadan appeals, and on-site donations via SumUp through moschee.io. There is no direct integration between the two. Make sure every donation receives only one receipt: betterplace issues receipts for donations through betterplace, your mosque for donations through moschee.io.
